Micropile Engineering: Stamped Designs for Difficult Soil Conditions

Right Angle Engineering provides PE-stamped micropile designs for projects where standard shallow foundations are not adequate. We size micropiles for axial, lateral, and uplift loads and produce permit-ready drawings accepted by AHJs in all 50 states.

Micropiles are used when soil conditions limit the capacity of spread footings, when the site has difficult access that prevents conventional deep foundation equipment, or when existing foundations need to be reinforced without disturbing the structure above. We work with general contractors, geotechnical engineers, and specialty foundation contractors on micropile projects across all building types.

Our Design Team

When Micropiles Are the Right Solution

Micropiles are small-diameter, high-capacity piles installed using rotary drilling equipment. Their small footprint makes them effective in situations where conventional pile driving or drilled shaft installation is not practical.

Common applications include:

▮
Sites with restricted access or low overhead clearance
▮
Foundation underpinning when existing buildings cannot be relocated
▮
Areas with variable or poor soil conditions where shallow foundations would not provide adequate capacity
▮
Seismic retrofit projects where additional foundation capacity is needed
▮
Hillside construction where soil conditions vary with depth

Quality & Compliance

What Our Micropile Engineering Includes

Our micropile designs are sized for the specific loads and soil conditions of each project. We produce:

▮
Micropile layout plans showing pile locations, spacing, and orientations
▮
Load calculations for axial, lateral, and uplift demands
▮
Pile section details including diameter, grout specifications, and steel casing or bar requirements
▮
Connection details to the structure or pile cap above
▮
Specification notes for installation and quality control

We work from geotechnical reports provided by the project geotechnical engineer. If a geotech report is not available, we can advise on what data is needed before design proceeds.

How It Works

Micropile Engineering for Underpinning

One of the most common applications we handle is foundation underpinning for existing buildings. When an existing foundation is settling, undersized for new loads, or needs to be deepened to allow for adjacent excavation, micropiles provide a way to transfer loads to deeper, more competent soil without requiring the building to be vacated or the existing foundation to be demolished.

We coordinate with the project team to ensure that the underpinning design accounts for the existing structural loads, the sequence of installation, and any monitoring requirements during construction.

Why Right Angle for Micropile Engineering

Micropile design requires understanding of both structural engineering and geotechnical principles. Our licensed PEs have experience across the full range of micropile applications, from single residential underpinning projects to large commercial foundation systems.

We are licensed in all 50 states. Most micropile projects are delivered within 48 hours. If the plan reviewer or the contractor has questions during construction, your engineer is available to respond directly.
