Retaining Wall Engineering: Stamped Plans for Every Site

Right Angle Engineering provides PE-stamped retaining wall designs for residential and commercial projects. We design gravity walls, cantilevered walls, and segmental retaining wall systems sized for the specific site loads, soil conditions, and geometry of each project.

Most jurisdictions require a structural PE stamp for retaining walls over a certain height, typically four to six feet, or for walls that retain soil adjacent to structures or property lines. We produce permit-ready drawings with calculations that satisfy AHJ requirements in all 50 states.

Types of Retaining Walls We Engineer

01

Gravity Retaining Walls

Gravity walls resist lateral earth pressure through their own weight. Common materials include concrete block, stone, and large concrete units. We size gravity walls for the soil pressure, surcharge loads, and geometry of the project, and confirm that the wall has adequate sliding and overturning resistance.

02

Cantilevered Retaining Walls

Cantilevered walls use a footing and wall stem to resist lateral pressure, making them efficient for taller walls where gravity-only design would require excessive mass. We design cantilevered walls in reinforced concrete and masonry, with full footing design, wall reinforcement, and shear and moment calculations.

03

Segmental Retaining Walls (SRW)

Segmental retaining walls use interlocking concrete units stacked without mortar. These are common in residential landscaping and commercial site development. We design SRW systems per NCMA standards, including geosynthetic reinforcement layouts when required by wall height or loading conditions.

04

Sheet Pile and Soldier Pile Walls

For projects with limited space behind the wall or where excavation needs to proceed before wall construction is complete, we design sheet pile and soldier pile walls with tiebacks or deadman anchors as required by the site geometry and soil conditions.

Every retaining wall design we produce includes:

▮
Lateral earth pressure calculations using active, passive, and at-rest soil pressures as applicable
▮
Sliding and overturning stability checks
▮
Global stability analysis when wall height and site conditions require it
▮
Footing design and reinforcement details (cantilevered and sheet pile systems)
▮
Construction notes and material specifications
▮
Site-specific load inputs including surcharge loads from structures, vehicles, or equipment
